It is important to be straight forward with the point in what you're seeing. Keep in mind the culture that the kids come from and some of the traditions or the way that they do things and then try and communicate to them in a way that they will understand and not feel as thought they are being attacked or anything of the sort. I wouldn't ever compare their kid to another kid in the classroom as doing so would cause problems and everyone has a different way of learning. Making sure that the parents are comfortable as well and having some type of relationship with them is good as well.
