I feel that, as a professional, understanding yourself - your own strengths and weaknesses - is the first step to being able to collaborate with families effectively. When getting to know parents, let them know where their expertise might be helpful where yours might be lacking. Listen to the family's personal needs and collaborate with them to come up with a way to accommodate those needs in a way that best supports the child's development. Show appreciation when families contribute to their child's learning experience. These things will encourage further cooperation and collaboration between yourself and the children's families.
