You can look for a sudden change in behavior , when the child becomes disconnected or cries when it's time for them to go home. Also if you see any strange bruises or scars.

Being familiar with what is 'normal' and really noticing the little ones in my care is one way to be alert to possible mistreatment. As well as reading the pamphlet on "Protecting the Abused and neglected Child" and being aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse. Taking courses as well is a great way to gain familiarity with potential abuse scenarios and how to best respond.

Physical abuse is nonaccidental physical injury that is inflicted by a parent, caregiver, or other person who has responsibility for the child. Neglect is the failure of a parent, guardian, or other caregiver to provide for a child’s basic needs.

Caregivers, teachers and others professionals in positions that have close and frequent contact with children are considered "mandated reporters" of abuse. The time spent with children makes caregivers likely to become aware of any maltreatment that may be occurring. You must protect the child in care from abuse, neglect or exploitation, as required under Chapter 26.44 RCW

How can you become familiar with the symptoms of child abuse, including physical, sexual, verbal and emotional abuse, and physical or emotional neglect?
I can become familiar with the symptoms of child abuse by knowing and gaining understanding of what child abuse is the, the evidence or distinction that indicates child abuse and the steps to take if there is a sign of abuse. Another way that I can be sure to become familiar is by studying what actions that a child will show that may indicate a sign of abuse and encouraging open communication among child

One way to become aware of the signs of abuse is to have your licensor supply you with a copy of the pamphlet "Protecting the Abused and neglected Child".
Some of the symptoms could be:
-Sudden change in behavior
-Overly compliant or withdrawn
-Frightened of parents or cries when it's time to go home
-Shrinks at the approach of an adult
-has unexplained bruises, bites, broken bones, black eyes
-The child directly tells you he/she is being abused
