Most of the toys really are just pieces of plastic. It's hard to find open ended play toys at a store.
I would rather use recyclable such as boxes, string, cups to stack and plastic containers (that are safe). I also like to use things from home like pots, spatulas, dishes, empty food containers like cereal boxes and plastic juice bottles. These things children see at home and also provide more open ended play.

I listed a lot of the same things as the both of you. I have a toddler myself and she loves to play with plastic cups especially during bath time. when I am cooking she plays with pots and pans and uses them as drums along with the help of plastic or wooden spoons
