My workplace serves clients who come from diverse backgrounds, including Hispanic, Eastern European, and African-American clients. One of my Hispanic coworkers has advised me that boys in her culture are given more latitude to be rambunctious in their behavior, compared to some Anglo expectations. They may require some patience as they learn to navigate the difference in expectations between their home and community settings and my workplace. I also have been advised of differences in gender roles. Some Eastern European clients may come from a background that is accustomed to male authority. In certain circumstances, female staff may need to avail themselves of assistance from male coworkers, until students become more accustomed to authority exercised by a female figure. And the opposite may be true for some African-American clients, who may be more accustomed to female authority.
