There were three men who were about to be sentenced to death, but the executioner was feeling generous so he allowed them to choose the way by which they wanted to die. They could choose boiling alive in water, being stabbed with a sword, or the guillotine.
The first man chose the guillotine since it would be over with the fastest. He was ready to die, but the guillotine only went half way down and stopped. The executioner let him go back to his cell to wait for when it would be fixed. On his way back, he whispered to the second man that the guillotine wasn't working.
The second man chose the guillotine, too, and it was still broken and the blade only went down half way. Thankful for the tip, the second man decided to pass the good news to the third man, as the first man had done to him.
The third man nodded, understanding, and when it was his turn to decide, said to the executioner, "I heard the guillotine's not working, so I choose the water."
