I recently moved across the state, during Covid-19, to live closer to my adult children and grandchildren. So, I'm currently not working at a center. I worked 18+ years at my last childcare. It was a "latchkey" program for 5-12 year old children. I'm drawing from what cultures were represented at that childcare. I spoke often with the parents about their values and ideas.
The cultures represented were North American (of European descent); South American (of Mexican descent); Asian (of Chinese descent); and Indian (of India's descent). The North American cultures were from America. They represented the typical values and ideas currently in America. Family is important , and takes many forms. There were some single-parents and some two-parent families. (Two-parent families were both male/female couples and same-sex couples). Grandparents played a role in the children's lives (some even being the guardians of the children).
The South American culture of Mexicans placed a high value on family. Also, all generations of the family worked together (like the saying--It takes a village to raise children). They work long and hard to better their family's situation.
The Chinese culture was very focused on high intensity learning. Always studying, and having advanced tutors outside of school.
There was also an Indian culture (from India). They had a strict vegetarian diet. These children were also into advanced learning.
The "common thread" that every culture represented had was--FAMILY IS IMPORTANT,
no matter what form it takes.
