Confidentiality is important because parents sometimes have fragile egos and don't want other parents to know that their child may have developmental difficulties because of their own insecurities. In seriousness, confidentiality is important because it can sometimes be a safety issue. Also, everyone has a right to their own privacy. Possible outcomes for not maintaining confidentiality might include a loss of trust between myself and the parent/caregiver, there could even be lawsuits involved.

Why is confidentiality important? What could be possible outcomes for not maintaining confidentiality?
As educators, it is our job to respect the privacy rights of all families and only disclose personal information when all sensitive parties have deemed it appropriate. If personal information is shared without consent, it can create a range of problems including: damage in reputation and credibility, lack of integrity and overall disgrace or public humiliation for families from different cultures or backgrounds as well as legal action taken against the person who leaked sensitive data.
