As a teacher it can be easy to think that your job is to set rules and make sure the children in your care follow them. However, it's our job to help them make good decisions--kind choices, and respectful choices. I liked the three rules in the handbook: We keep ourself safe, we keep our friends safe, we keep our things safe. Having broad rules or guidelines like these can lead to conversations with the children about what it means to keep ourselves safe, or friends, or things. Having guidelines like these are better than having a long list of rules, which can seem overwhelming to young children (and adults too).
