A safe outdoor environment is fenced, with no possibility of entrapment or crushing in areas where children will play. Equipment is in good repair, and no broken toys or sharp objects are near. Pesticides are kept away from where children play, and if used there must be posting to notify parents.
A safe indoor environment is one with surfaces that can be cleaned and disinfected, with clean toys and no possibility for entrapment. Toileting facilities must be available, and they need to be cleaned daily. Doors to the outside need to have an alarm to let staff know when children leave. All chemicals are kept away from children. Heavy objects are properly secured to avoid crushing. Diapering and toileting are kept separate from food prep areas.
