I like to talk to the parent and baby while they are holding their baby fora few minutes, then ask to hold the child. I keep talking to the parent while we walk over to where other children or toys are and find something for the child to hold or look at while beginning to say goodbye to the family member. If the baby is crying or having a hard time after the parent leaves, we have some more cuddles and talk about how the family member is always going to come back and that I'll take good care of them and that we have lots of friends to play with. Usually, after no more than 5 minutes, the crying has stopped and they have become more interested in what is happening in the classroom.
