Professionalism looks different in the world of Early Childhood Education that it does in other work contexts. While teachers are required to be professional, they also must be nurturing and warm and loving toward the children in their care because that is what the children need for their development. Because of this, my opinion is that the key to professionalism for early childhood educators is implementing boundaries. Professional caregivers need to separate themselves from the role of parent or family member. Understanding what their role is, being a professional means not taking on more emotional responsibilities with that. Also, professionalism plays a role in how caregiver interact with families of children in their care. Boundaries should prevent them from inquiring about personal things that do not relate to the child's development. The professional skill of interpersonal communication will enable a caregiver to communicate effectively and respectfully with families.
