When I have been so frustrated that I thought I might lose my temper and respond in a verbally harsh way, I have told the child that we both need to take a few deep breaths and think calm down for a few minutes. After we have each taken a few minutes to think and calm down, we are both better able to discuss what happened without losing our tempers.
