One of the most effective responses I have ever seen to a child’s disruptive behavior is a teacher who called the child’s name to gain his attention. Once she had his attention, stopping what she had been doing, she looked him in the eyes, and rather than telling him what he needed to stop doing, she told him what he may do. She didn’t list an alternative to the behavior he needed to exhibit, but she also didn’t command him to do anything. Because he knew that she was serious and that she expected something he was capable of doing, the child did exactly what she suggested.
