To some extent, the way people act, talk, and control their bodies to communicate a desire for connection depends on the culture to which they belong. In the majority of American culture, people who want to connect with others make direct eye contact and face the person with whom they are speaking. They listen silently and attentively, interjecting into the conversation when appropriate. When they speak, it is respectful and polite.
