Because parents may never have noticed their child's developmental delays or considered the possibility of an abnormality, it can be a touchy subject to address. For this reason, it important for a teacher to be sensitive and cautious when discussing developmental screening with parents. The teacher should be clear, concise, and have examples to back up the claims she makes. It is also important to assure the parents that a developmental delay is not their fault, and doesn't necessarily mean that their child is less intelligent than other children. A teacher should come to the conversation fully prepared, ready to provide a list of resources to help the parents.
