The information gained through observation is valuable because it is unique. Studying child development and educational practices is critically important to competent caregiving, but it is not enough. Observation will teach a caregiver things she could never learn in a classroom. In observation, a child becomes the teacher and teaches his caregiver about himself. The information learned from observation allows a caregiver to tailor her curriculum to help the children with their specific needs and encourage their specific interests.
