While there are a variety of different tools for observing the development of children, a few stand out as most common. Anecdotal records are short narrative accounts, written by the observer after he observes a child’s behavior in a particular situation. Caregivers also use checklists as an observational tool, allowing them to monitor a child’s development over time. They can check off milestones of development as they observe them occurring. Running records, unlike anecdotal records, provide a narrative of an entire section of time rather than just a particular event. By keeping tallies of event, caregivers are able to record how often they observed a behavior occurring in the course of a day. Media can also be useful in observing children’s development because caregivers can record behaviors and rewatch it to study what happened.
