Understanding a child’s development allows a teacher to determine whether or not the child is developing at the same rate as his peers or at a delayed rate. Because child care involves meeting children where they are in their development, needs, and interests, knowing an individual child’s development progress can help the caregiver to know what she needs to do in order to encourage the child in his progress. She is better able to show him care, when she knows what they means because she knows where he is at in his development.
