I would approach the parent in a private setting such as an arranged meeting, not during pick-up or drop-off times. I would also make sure to have plenty of evidence to support my concerns (observations) as well as printed out information about developmental milestones to pertaining to the child's age group so I could show the parents where their child meets, exceeds, or is delayed in the continuum. I would also have information on where they could go to look into further screening. If the parents were uncomfortable or defensive, I would make sure to have the program supervisor or co-teacher who is allowed access to the child's confidential file there with me to help me explain in the most effective way. Before talking to the family I need to consider the culture of the family, know where to direct them to get more information, and ensure I have concrete observations to show them supporting my concerns.
