All young children first and foremost need to feel loved, safe, and cared for in their homes and in their place of care. They need to be physically stimulated so they can gain important skills in movement as well as get out excess energy. They need to be challenged intellectually so they can learn to problem solve and begin to understand how things work. They also need to have opportunities to have social interactions with both other children and adults. When I was a nanny I watched a boy who was an only child. He wasn't timid by temperament, but he hadn't been around children as much as he had been around adults before entering preschool, so it took a little longer for him to warm up to and understand how to play cooperatively with the other children in his class.
