How would you approach a parent or caregiver about the need for a referral for developmental screening of their child? What do you need to consider before talking to a parent or caregiver?
When approaching a parent or caregiver about the need for a possible referral for developmental screening of their child, it's best to come prepared with an assessment or observation regarding the red flag, a list of resources available, and a patient and listening attitude. Because this information could be confirming issues they have seen, or it could be new to them, being prepared to listen with compassion is important. I make sure to reassure caregivers about the confidential nature of the observations, and that we are working together for what is best for their child.
