Having open, honest communication is key to developing a respectful and reciprocal relationship with the families you work with. It is important to have a good understanding of yourself because then you can better understand the similarities and differences between yourself and others, and actively choose to be respectful of those differences. Respecting diversity is key, because you want every family (regardless of culture or background) you work with to feel safe and comfortable leaving their child in your care. You need to show respect for cultural differences whether you agree with them or not. Also, sharing about your life and asking about theirs will help them to feel respected and understood and feel like they know you well enough to trust you with helping to nurture the well-being and development of their child.
