As someone who not only visited many of these "Professionals" and has worked beside them, the best way I have found to get to know my kids or families is to first choose the one thing that I see that we each have in common or that I really like about them or on them. I then move on to a part that lets me know them without them even knowing that I'm asking the questions. I learned this technique when I was seeing a "Professional" in my youth. I have come to realize that asking simple questions first (How are you, what did you do this weekend, etc) and then pinpoint one part of the conversation and dig deeper, they will open up and not even feel like they are on the spot light. Kids don't want to be singled out. They enjoy being appreciated but not shown as an outcast. You just have to let them know that what makes them unique is what makes them special.
