How a child signals that he or she needs help really depends a lot on, first, the child and, second, what kind of help is implied by the question. In an ideal situation, the child can't figure something out and goes to the teacher or a classmate to ask for assistance. If we are talking about a more sinister sounding "needs help," as in is having trouble dealing with the courses and pressures of daily life and studies, it gets more complicated. Many children in this position might attack, throw fits, or be verbally abusive. Others might be the opposite and withdraw and become less communicative. As I think about the first kind of "help" (the "I don't know how to fit these things together to finish the puzzle kind"), a child who hasn't yet thought to ask for help might become frustrated and throw a piece, or cry, depending on age.
