I've seen a lot of things cause a child to feel disconnected. One of the biggest is discrimination based on race/national origin. What compounds that is when a teacher or authority figure who has no experience of that kind of discrimination minimizes the effect it has on the student. Other things that can cause a child to become disconnected is a sense that a teacher doesn't like or care about them. There are many, many others that come to mind...a teacher who doesn't respect a student is another.
