To really work well with children, you need to have the respect of each and every child. To get that, the first step is to respect each and every child. Responses to negative behavior in this case that I've seen work include "Please don't do that," or "Please go do <something else>." Children also respond well to positive comments, like "You are doing <x> so well!" When you have the respect of the child, he or she really cares about what you, as a teacher, say.
