2.2. Every program has Guidance Polices. If I were writing a Guidance Polices I would you want them to say?
If I were writing a Guidance Polices I would want polices to say that cameras are required in day cares/preschools programs, if they are receiving state or government funding. If possible receive written parent permission to video tape children’s interactions for pro-social and aggressive behavior. Also, there is abuse and neglect by care providers, and most of the time it’s only the care provider’s word whether there was an issue, because in most situations the child cannot speak for themselves, so I think having staff observe and record specific incidents is important, to document for reviewing situations of peers and or staff involvement, tapes activities involving this all can help with planning preventive strategies and help target guidance approaches.
There are children that are aggressive with the other children, sometimes biting or hitting, of course that is going to happen, children are going to hit and pick at other children, but sometimes when child care providers I try to talk with parents about a child’s behavior, the parent might say "my child is never like that at home", of course you should trust the parent’s word that the child may not act this way at home, like he does at child care, especially if there is no other children in the home, where it might require the child to share toys or his parent’s attention. So, this can be used as an opportunity to speak with the parent to discuss the child’s behavior and look at options in ways to discipline or and handle behavior at home, particularly how do help reduce the child’s frustration and control his impulses. And so, I think putting cameras in Guidance Polices will help and if a parent dismisses the concerns about a child's behavior and interactions with others, there will be video that can be shown to the parent.
