I interviewed my best friend. She's from Japan and moved to the United States when she was 11.
She mentioned that in her culture, family comes before anything. It is the most important value to them over everything else. For example, the Japanese culture will often celebrate every holiday together, eat at least one meal a day together (usually dinner, AND at the table) and have open family discussion on a regular basis.
Not only that, but the Japanese culture also values education and wisdom. It's not uncommon for every family member to have some sort of college degree or post high school education. It's important to them to live a life full of knowledge and new experiences.
