1) The preschool years are characterized by exploration and trying new things, which makes this boy's behavior completely natural. 2) The boy's parent could be upset by his son trying on dresses for many different reasons. When discussing the situation with the parent, it is important to listen and understand if he is upset for religious, cultural, or personal reasons. A caregiver should explain that the child was trying something he saw his peers doing, exploring and observing the same way any preschooler would be likely to do. 3) The boy may be trying on dresses because he saw his peers playing dress up or because he sees his mom wear dresses at home. He also may simply want to engage in dress up activities, but not be finding any male clothes because the care center only has girls' dress up clothes. 4) I would suggest to the parent that we work together to provide more male costumes for the boy to try on during dress up and dramatic play, perhaps some that particularly interest him. The parent may also want to sit down with his son at home and discuss why dressing up as a girl is not an appropriate activity given their beliefs or culture.
