This could easily be debated endlessly. There is the school of thought that children must be protected from everything all of the time, and there is the school of thought that children learn through mistakes. Regardless of my personal views (I have no issues giving a five-year-old a child sized saw, hammer, and nails, but "conventional wisdom" in the west suggests that this is inappropriate, so we don't five children saws). We follow the requirements that tall things are secured to the wall, outlets are tamper proof, all hazardous substances are out of reach, etc. Our program doesn't use playground equipment, so our outdoor safety is really simple. We have the required thickness of wood chips :-).
