You must provide a wide range of materials, equipment, and activities that are not only developmentally appropriate but that also reflect a wide range of interests and cultures. You must make sure that your students see themselves reflected in the classroom. They should capitalize on the students individual interests while also introducing them to new ideas. The primary way to determine if the materials you provided are developmentally appropriate is through careful planning, knowledge of the different temperaments of the children, and finally through careful observation. How is the student responding to thew material? Are they bored? Confused? Or are they engaged and excited to explores the materials and learn more? There can be a wide range of development within an age group and as such observation is essential to serving the different needs of the children in your care.
