First and foremost a place where the child feels welcome and safe. There must be program scheduling, a physical layout, and procedures that are best for the children in that space as well as stimulating, challenging activities throughout the day. There must be staff working closely with children, observing them carefully, and following their lead when possible, allowing the children to choose activities. The better a space and activity is planned the less a teacher needs to interrupt the children's explorative play to redirect them.
