I would prefer the checklist method because i like the idea fo check off the things they do well and you could share it with them when they are older or understand. The con to this method is if they did see that they developed at a slower pace than other children their age they might get discouraged.

Checklist: keep track of when when children reach certain development.
Running record: a narrative account written by the observer detailing everything that occurs within certain period of time.
Tally event : a list that helps you know how often somethings happens during the day or with a particular child.
photos and videotaping: Using media Capture children's skills and strengths.

I've always been a fan of checklist they are just easier to use for me so I would have to say I prefer that method.
