The common cold, the stomach flu, eczema, and pink eye are the most common illnesses we see.
cold: sniffles, coughs, fever, runny nose. Case by case care: usually keep at center, but send home if too lethargic, too miserable, or fever too high. Medicate with whatever cough medicine parent has approved.
flue: upset stomach, fever, diarrhea, lethargy. Send home if multiple cases of throwing up or if three or more runny bowel movements, combined with fever over 100.
eczema: dry, itchy, cracking or bleeding skin. Can be caused by food allergies/sensitivities to chemicals. treat with lotion provided by parents, as well as cover sores with bandages. Do not send home.
Pink Eye: reddish or pink whites of eyes. yellowish or greenish discharge from one or both eyes. Send home if untreated. Child needs to be on doctor-prescribed antibacterial/antibiotic drops for 24 hrs. before returning to class. Highly contagious. Teach all children present to avoid touching their faces/eyes, and wash hands and surfaces more frequently than ever.
Minor scrapes, bumps, bruises, and even bites (from other young children) are the most common injuries: cleanse with water or wipes, ice, time sitting with a teacher, periodic checks to make sure not worse, write reports.
