Children need a wide variety of equipent and activities. What they need will vary, depending on the age of the children. We work with preschool children, so our materials aim to engage their minds, while allowing a scaffolding of fine and gross motor skills from the age of about 2-1/2 to 6. For us, choosing materials is easy, we are a Montessori program. We use primarily Montessori materials, but also suppliment with art materials and techniques learned from looking at Reggio programs. We tend to prefer more natural materials, a bit like some Waldorf programs. By using existing programs, choosing developmentally appropriate materials is really easy.
