How can you develop respectful, reciprocal relationships with families in your practice? Do you think an understanding of diversity plays a part? An understanding of yourself?
I think the best way to create a wonderful relationship with families in our program is to simply love their kid and tell them awesome things about who their kid is. Every parent wants to hear positive stories about their kid! I think diversity can play a part sometimes, but not all the time. It just depends on the family.

I believe to get a great relationship with the families is to just show you love and care for their children and want what's best for them and to show that you want them to succeed.

This is a tricky and very complex question. I believe the best way to determine how to develop respectful relationships with families is to first think about the Golden Rule. How would I like to be approached as a parent? Think about how you want to be treated and then model that through your own behavior and interactions.
Diversity and understanding yourself definitely plays a role in this technique. The key to successful interaction is to establish a balance between kind inquisitive nature and respecting boundaries. Also, be aware of pace and time orientation in other cultures and social relationships.
