Discussion 3.4: After reading Handout 4, "Age Appropriate Behavior Scenarios," first, identify a scenario, then answer the following questions about that scenario in the appropriate discussion forum -
Do you think this behavior or expectation is age appropriate? (check the Guidelines if unsure)
How could you explain this to the parents/co- workers/etc.? What would you suggest and is there anything you can do to prevent this situation/problem from happening again?
1) Infant Scenario: Jamal is almost 10 months old and just entering the separation anxiety
stage—when older babies or young toddlers resist separating from their primary caregiver. This
is a normal part of growth and development and a milestone in social-emotional development
that shows Jamal’s attachment to his mother. Jamal’s parents are concerned because he is
now crying and clinging when his parents bring him in the morning. They are worried that
something has happened to him since he didn’t act this way for the previous 4 months he’d
been at your center.
a. Yes this behavior is age appropriate. b. "The reason he/she is crying, is because your baby has just started a normal phase called "Separation Anxiety." It is when babies become more aware of their surroundings and the caretakers. c."To make it easier on both the parent and the baby, I would suggest the parent or primary caregiver to come in, and spend some time with the baby until baby either gets distracted or falls asleep. There is not much that can be done to prevent this from happening again, because it is normal part of the developing child's stage.
