Discussion 3.2: What is executive functioning and toxic stress?
Executive functioning is the brain's "Air Traffic Control System", enable the brain and body to deal with multiple information and distractions at one time.
Can be broken down into three skill areas: Working Memory, Inhibitory Control and Mental Flexibility.
Toxic Stress: There are 3 kinds of stress in child development. a.Positive Stress: results in brief increases in heart rate and hormones, considered normal. Does not have impact on brain development b.Tolerable Stress: such as serious injury or loss of loved one, is more intense and causes body's stress systems to go on high alert. Does not have negative impact on developing of the brain. c.Toxic Stress: when negative events are chronic and prolonged, such as severe poverty, domestic abuse, parental mental health issues, or drug/alcohol dependency, sever maternal depression, repeated abuse, or chronic neglect.
