How do professionals get to know the children and families in their care / program?
Professionals get to know children through intentionality. Professionals have a handful of children for the teacher to students ratio so it can be hard to get to know each kid. However, I think it is all about creating the time and being intentional with the time given for each kid. Specifically teachers can ask the students questions every day that build off each other. Whenever a teacher remembers that a student went on an awesome road trip over the weekend and asked about it on Monday really means a lot and also allows the student to open up about who they are.
When students are pursued and cared for every day by the same teacher that builds trust within him or her to then be themselves.

As previously mentioned, educators should take the time to really engage and interact with the families of all of their students. When time allows, talk with the parents, siblings and your student together. Try to learn about their home environment, their family background, interests, hobbies, schedules etc. Do they have a special routine or family dynamic? How could you enhance your student's learning environment by celebrating the diversity of the families in your community? I think it is very important for teachers to ask themselves these questions and find ways to encourage diversity while also being aware of "reverse-racism" and celebrating equality!
