2.1: What types of play materials, equipment and activities should you provide for children? What is needed in an outdoor environment?
In a Montessori environment, we provide materials that encourage exploration in many areas. Many of the materials are multipurpose, like the red rods, and others encourage a child to move on to activities of varying difficulty. The materials must be safe, engaging, and interesting to children. In the Practical Life area, they might include pouring work, sifting work, or button/zipper frames. There needs to be enough work so that any particular child can find something interesting. Outdoor environments are excellent places for dramatic play and work with large motor skills. There should be enough space to run, and enough padding to absorb a fall. Outdoor areas should include balls, sandboxes, and other things that will encourage interaction among the children.
