Discussion 2.3: What are individual differences in needs?
The "easy" or "flexible" - This type of child does not have problem transitioning, and going along with the class.
The "difficult" or "spirited" - This type of child tends to be outspoken, strong-willed and not shy.
The "slow to warm up" or "shy" -This type of child needs time to adjust to a new environment, for caregivers to be extra attentive in giving him all the necessary help to feel comfortable to go about by himself.
I have three children, and all are very different. My oldest is a shy one, it takes her a while to get situated in a new place, to speak to new people. My second is easy and flexible, very social. My third one is the difficult and spirited one, she tends to go for what she wants, and has a hard time accepting anything else. All three of them require different ways of approach to be most effective. With my shy child, I give her lots of space to go at her pace, and it helps her, because she trusts me, and does not feel forced. My Easy/Flexible one is, the easiest, he does not necessarily need an approach, he goes well with everything. My spirited one is 3, and still little, but I see that I have to form a new approach to her, because I need to be effective in breaking through to her, so she will see the importance of doing the right thing, not just obeying me, but keeping to herself.
