Everyone learns a different way. some can learn on their own, some need direct instruction, some are hands on learners. In order to keep them engaged and inspired you need to have a group of different activities that appeals to the different types of learning. have the children work together and also by themselves.

Every child learns differently and at their own pace with a range of two or more years difference. Some children will have unique likes or abilities outside the age range of the group and then you have your special needs kids that will require certain activities to be modified. Having varieties of activities that keeps the kids interest, where they can be comfortable and safe as well as being challenged within a group or individually.
