Having just taken Observation & Assessment, I've developed a method that works exceptionally well for me. It involves a Go Pro, which the child quickly forgets about, as I monitor from nearby, or if possible around the corner. If the child goes to another area, I simply follow him/her with the camera and place it in the new area. This allows me to look carefully at the fine details that I would miss doing a more direct observation. I then do a running record of what I see on the video. The ability to go back and look again is incredibly valuable. Once the running record is done, I do an analysis of what I observed and decide what, if any, formal assessment tool will be necessary.
