I believe the first thing that should be noted is that you actually care for the child and their well being and to make sure the family knows that. Then talk with the family and create an open channel of communication about the child and the child's life. Once the family is comfortable with communicating with you, you will be able to more fully communicate with the families and share your concerns about the child. If you start of with concerns the family will feel like you are criticizing their child because you have no relationship to that family.
