3) Preschool Scenario: You have been running your own family child care home for a couple
of years and have an extensive collection of dress up clothes that the children adore. A parent
has just started her three and four year old sons in your program and seems very upset when
he comes to pick his boys up and finds them dressed as princesses. This parent is concerned
that dressing up in girl’s clothes is inappropriate for boys and will cause them to be confused
and teased. You are also upset because the boys love dressing up and you don’t want to
restrict children’s imaginative play.
1. Do you think this behavior or expectation is age appropriate? (check the Guidelines if unsure)
Yes, absolutely. Kids will copy their playmates, and this is a real exercise in creativity. Many boys of this age will wear mom's shoes, which isn't all that different.
2. How could you explain this to the parents/co- workers/etc.?
Exactly like I did in #1 :-).
3. Why might the child(ren) act this way?
This is simply part of a child learning to learn. These children are seeing something, and engaging their creative minds as part of active play.
4. What would you suggest and is there anything you can do to prevent this situation/problem from happening again?
I wouldn't suggest much, other than accepting that children learn and learn to learn in different ways. These boys will play like this for a while, and then be on to the next grand adventure. Nothing to be worried about.
