Before I talked to the parents about their child's development I'd be sure to have observed him/her over a certain period of time. When i sit down to talk to the parents I'd ask them first to see if they have noticed anything about their child's development. Then I would show them my notes and what I have noticed. Assure them there are programs that can and will help. You need to be straight forward but not offensive.

Before speaking with the parents of one of your kids in your classroom, make sure that you have kept well written documentations of your observation over a certain period of time, ask a co-worker to hear you out in how you are planning on relating the information to the parents and get any advise from them, be sensitive towards the parents, they may be a little protective of their child, ask the parents if they have seen anything odd or if there is any concern about their child's developmental, ensure the parents that there are resources for them to seek out (recommend a resource after you've done some research and your own investigation of the resources near by) and be willing to help out in anyway.
