Environments that inspire learning and keep children engaged are ones that display educational projects and materials in fun and very easily accessible ways.
In a learning environment, for example, you can choose to make books especially attractive by placing them on a low shelf, picking ones that explore interests the children already have as well as topics that will broaden their horizons, and make the books the focal point of an extremely cozy and cute corner of the room.
Educational games or activities (erasable letter and shape tracing boards, for example) can be kept in low baskets. Teach children how to use them, and then mention these materials when instructing children on which toy centers they may choose from in a given play period. Chances are that if the materials are in a prominent and accessible place on a shelf, organized and attractively displayed, children will begin to voluntarily go to these materials and practice important skills with empowering independence.
Finally, if an environment can display the successes and accomplishments of children (their writing, art projects, or photos on shelves or on the walls), that boosts childrens confidence and makes them feel strong and celebrated within the environment. This will help to motivate learning and engagement.
