My guidelines would be ones that were based on mutual respect between the children and the teacher. I would want a positive reward system to be my first choice, but I'm sure there are cases where negative behavior cannot be disregarded. The main components of my rules and guidelines would be that we treat one another in ways that we ourselves would want to be treated - respectful, kind, caring, sharing and working together.

Yes, mutual respect between the children and the teacher is a good guidelines choice, and a positive reward system is great. but when I think of the positive reward system I think of those Behavior charts color-coded charts teachers use to use, cards or clothes pins or popsicle sticks to represent each child in the class. If students are good, they get rewarded with a good color. If they are bad, they are punished with a bad color, which usually comes with some type of consequence. These charts are not private, they are not just between teachers and students, but to a child they are public reminders that the teacher thinks I am Bad and that can sometimes be humiliating to a child, and should never be accepted or condoned.
