First, it would be good to be familiar with the typical behavior of children at a certain age. Reference the guidelines and make sure that children are within typical development, but it might be hard to determine if a child is "just" shy or if he or she is withdrawn for reasons of abuse. Because of that, you should observe if a child has unexplained injuries such as bruises or cuts that seem inconsistent with play due to severity or location. In addition, you must observe the behaviors of the parents or family in regards to the child. If they seem to show a lack of concern for their child or perhaps extreme over protectiveness, it may be that there is something worth investigating.
